I am struck by all the contradictions and counter intuitive ideas that I am discovering in my leadership coaching and consulting work. I think a leader is someone who inspires those around them to be their best selves. Yet, it isn't until the leader can be their own best self that they can inspire it in others. In other words, a leader cannot take people any deeper in their development than the leader has gone. This is counter intuitive because if I want to be a great leader then I have to focus on myself. It's almost like I cannot truly 'see' others until I can 'see' myself and be at peace with who I am in this world. It makes sense to me now why coaching is by far the most effective leadership tool. The difference between a boss and a leader is how well the person knows themselves.
