If you work in an organization where the person who is in charge of the decisions does not want to be the leader ("not it!"), then you might feel like you are being whipsawed on a daily basis. The person who has the most equity in a business is naturally thought of as the leader. Troubles surface when that person has no interest or experience in leadership. While you cannot force anyone to be a leader, you can be subtle in the ways you behave to usher some leadership skills from this person. First, ask them "what" and "how" questions, so you can get them thinking out loud. Second, provide potential pitfalls for decisions as they are being considered, because this will help the person to make more informed choices. Third, acknowledge this person for the leadership qualities that you see in them, so they can visualize themselves in that role.
