Sit Still

I am a big fan of Brene Brown. She's a shame researcher and has uncovered the secrets to living a joyful life. She's taught us that we cannot selectively numb emotions. In other words, when we numb the negative emotions, we are also numbing the positive ones. While it sounds counter intuitive, the way to experience joy is to also allow emotional discomfort. I've noticed lately that I've been using food (oh Nutella you sweet devil!) and Netflix to distract myself from being present. Being aware that I am numbing offers me the opportunity to make a different choice. By choosing to be present, I may have to sit in my discomfort but it also helps me to notice the many joys that occur in my life.
