As someone who loves to learn about how organizations develop their people, I stumbled upon an article regarding an author's skepticism about coaching cultures. He said he didn't think it was appropriate for our co-workers to be our therapists. This thought led me to wonder how much should we share with our coworkers and colleagues. As an engineer, I love data. The more I know about something, the more clarity I seem to have. Therefore, when a coworker shares personal information with me, I find it helpful to understand this person more deeply. Additionally, I feel more connected to this person, which helps me to work with them more effectively. Counter to the author's premise, I don't feel the need to put myself into a "therapist's" role when someone shares personal information with me.
