Handling Difficult People
A colleague of mine was sharing how she struggled during a meeting because the people on the leadership team were so defensive. She has a long history with these folks, so she admits that she has an emotionally negative reaction when she has to be in a room with them. She asked for some tips. First, when they respond in a defensive manner, she can mirror their language back to them. Sometimes when a person hears what they say from someone else, they recognize how their language comes across. Second, if she were able to forgive them of their past wrongs, then she might shift her emotional reactions to them. Third, if she could decide what her boundaries would be when she is with them, then she would feel more confident to be around them without losing her cool.
